Mission to Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria affected education in Puerto Rico drastically. The University system which has an enrollment of over 57,000 students suffered incredible damage.

Documenting the effects of Hurricane Maria six months after.

Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, bringing catastrophic flooding, widespread devastation, and a major humanitarian crisis. The focus in our student journalism project was on stories of resilience, recovery, and hope—amplifying the voices of those rebuilding their lives and sharing their experiences with audiences back home to foster greater understanding.

Each of us produced our own mini-documentary, taking full responsibility for research, camera work, reporting, video and audio production, and post-production.

Between the mountains is a family market which opened 56 years ago. When Maria stuck, landslides and overflowing rivers destroyed the local community and a family market became Utuado’s lifeline.

#JCLocals

Jersey City is filled with families who have lived here for generations along with residents who decided to move here within the past five years. We’ve seen residents who’ve lived here for decades be pushed out of their homes due to taxes.

With the change in population and changes in the city, we decided to ask Jersey City residents about their perspective of Jersey City – their memories, their opinions on the changes, and what changes they would propose if given the authority.

Vanessa has lived in different neighborhoods in the city throughout her life. We had the chance to sit down with her to get her perspective on the changes in the city and her overall experience as a longtime resident.

Andrette Fuqua-Maple, along with her parents and husband, shared the story behind It Takes A Village, a community-based infant and toddler preschool center on Ocean Ave. The center, which follows a HighScope curriculum, is tucked away in Greenville.
